New Archbishop Promotes Unity, Healing - a message from the rector

New Archbishop Promotes Unity, Healing - a message from the rector

- Tuesday, March 31, 2026

How time flies when you’re having fun. It only seems like last week that a Roman monk named Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury (ABC). In fact it was 1,449 years ago.

Who’d have thought that in the year 2026, the Anglican Communion would be enthroning its 106th ABC. When I was ordained as a transitional deacon in the Church of England, you could not even be a priest if your name was Sarah, let alone anticipate a day when the head of the entire Anglican Communion would have that name.

I was ordained a priest in 1994, kneeling alongside the first ever women to be ordained priests in the Church of England. A staggering change in such a short time.

You Carry Christ

You Carry Christ

Monday, March 30, 2026

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of all our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our Redeemer. Amen.

The day had started just like any other. Ned was led out of his stable and was tied up outside his owner's house. Ned was happy to serve his people and was used to being borrowed by villagers who needed to transport goods from one place to another. So there was nothing remarkable about that visit of those two men.

Sure, Ned had never seen them before, but he was confident that they had his owner's permission, and his owner was a good man who'd never let Ned be harmed. End 2 But what happened next was unusual. The two men led him to a house around the corner where they placed cloaks on his back. And then, the strangest feeling, a man climbed onto Ned's back.

No one had ever sat on Ned before, and Ned didn't know how to react. He was scared, he didn't like this extra weight, and he was anxious that his legs might give way. But there was something about this man that Ned found reassuring. There was a gentleness to this rider, not like the impatient people who had ridden members of Ned's family.

Education for Ministry Opportunity at St. John's

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year small-group formation program from the University of the South in Sewanee, designed for lay people seeking a deeper understanding of Scripture, church history, and theology, as well as those discerning a call to ordained ministry. The program includes two years of Bible study (Old and New Testaments), followed by church history and theology, with a strong emphasis on theological reflection and lived faith. An EfM seminar group is forming at St. John’s for Fall 2026 with 8–10 participants. To learn more, visit efm.sewanee.edu or speak with the rector.
