Lenten Meditation Series - April 1

Lenten Meditations from Our Parish Family
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, we invite you to journey through Lent with daily meditations written by St. John’s parishioners. These reflections offer honest, thoughtful voices from within our community—meeting us right where we are in this season of prayer, repentance, and hope. Meditations will be shared by email, posted on Facebook, and available as printed weekly copies at the church. Be on the lookout, and let these shared words accompany you as we walk the Lenten road together.

Mark 10:17-31

The Cabaret song, “Money Makes the World Go Around” has swirled in my head since reading these verses. The wealthy man runs to Jesus to find out how to obtain eternal life. Like us he’s not surprised when Jesus quotes commandments about how to treat others. Then Jesus throws him a curve. He should sell all he owns and give it to the poor and follow Jesus. The man leaves grieving and even Jesus’ disciples are confounded when he goes on to state how difficult, even “impossible” it is for a rich man to enter God’s kingdom. How would you or I have reacted if we had been given that directive? God knows how attached we are to our money, our position, our power. Can we let it go? Jesus loves us and reminds us that with God nothing is impossible. He knows us and what we cling to in this world. However, he leaves us with a message, “but many who are first will be last and the last first”. I don’t know about my place in line but I suspect it will be at the last! At least we know that because of Jesus’ sacrifice we can be there at all.

Thanks be to God.
