All Ages Worship and More Summer Happenings

Summer Reads, Part Two - a message from the rector

Summer Reads, Part Two - a message from the rector

- Monday, July 14, 2025

It’s Monday morning and I’ve just taken my first glance at the Bible readings set for this coming Sunday. My heart sank. I remembered why I always like to take this Sunday off.

Unfortunately for me (and also for you) I’m here this Sunday, and it’s too late to ask anyone else to preach. So I guess I’m stuck with it.

It’s Mary and Martha. You know the story. Activist Martha versus contemplative Mary, and we all know which sister Jesus congratulates. I’m reminded of my shortcomings.

Then I realised that if there was ever a perfect Bible reading for the middle of summer it must be this. I do hope you are enjoying this season of less Martha-intensity, and are able to be like Mary in creating time to pray, read, and do important spiritual work. In the hope that you are, indeed, doing like Mary, I’m devoting my articles for a few weeks to recommending some books for you to get all Mary-like with.

Honduras Mission Team Needs Your Help!

Honduras Mission Team Needs Your Help!

St. John's is sending a medical mission team to Honduras July 22! We need a volunteer to drive the church bus.

1. We really would love to have someone pick us up at Atlanta airport on August 2. Our flight is scheduled to arrive into Atlanta at 5 p.m. central time. We should be ready to be picked up by 6 p.m. central time. There will be at least 11 of us.

2. We would love to have someone drive 5 people (large SUV or church bus) to Atlanta on July 22 leaving from Montgomery at around 3 p.m. (5 people, with 7 big bags and 5 carryons). 3. You have to be a brave soul for this one, but we would love to find a driver for the church bus on July 26 at 3 a.m. (Friday night or early Saturday morning according to how you look at it) heading to the Atlanta airport (6 people with 8 big bags and 6 carryons).

Email katdailey1234@gmail.com or call 334.462.8628 if you have questions or to volunteer.

SACRED GROUND: An Exploration of Race and Faith

SACRED GROUND: An Exploration of Race and Faith

Three Dioceses of Northern New England (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) are offering an 11-week study exploring race and faith beginning this fall. Sessions will take place on Zoom and are open to Dioceses around the country. There will be at least three circles that will meet at different times and on different days. Previous offerings of Sacred Ground that involve multiple Dioceses have benefited greatly from the regional diversity and the different backgrounds represented.

Sacred Ground is a curriculum developed by The Episcopal Church to explore the history of racism in our country as well as the economic and social legacies that continue to underlie divisions among us. To learn more about Sacred Ground, please view the Sacred Ground Invitational video “We Bless You” (22 Minutes) Click here, or for more general information, visit the Sacred Ground website here.

Outreach Opportunities

Outreach Opportunities

The idea of mission is a core principle of the Christian faith. At St. John’s we are committed to partnering with God to do his work of redemption in this world by assisting those in need through financial giving, hands on assistance, and donating needed items to the poor, the sick, the friendless, the prisoner, the homeless, and anyone in need. From working with local charities and nonprofits to international mission trips, members of St. John’s make it a point to be involved.
