Christian Education for Life - a message from the rector

Christian Education for Life - a message from the rector

- Monday, May 18, 2026

You’ve gotta love Boomers. They changed our culture. Once upon a time education was for kids. If you were smart enough to go to college, then your schooling would extend to your early 20s. For everyone else, you graduated high school, went into the workforce and, apart from on-the-job training, that was the end of your formal education.

Then the Boomers unleashed their curiosity on an unsuspecting world. For them, retirement was not the end of things, but a chance to learn new stuff. They said things like, “I think I’ll learn German ... I’ve always wanted to take up Mahjongg ... I want to travel and encounter other histories and cultures.” Boomers were inquisitive, eager to explore, and believed they had a duty to improve themselves right up to their final breaths.

All Ages Worship Brings Generations Together

All Ages Worship Brings Generations Together

At St. John’s, our All Ages Service has become a beautiful reminder that worship is strongest when generations gather together. Children, parents, grandparents, and longtime parishioners share prayers, music, and fellowship side by side, creating a space where everyone belongs and every voice matters. The service has brought new energy, deeper connections, and joyful moments of learning and faith across generations — strengthening our church family one Sunday at a time.

Join us this summer at 9:30 Sundays in the Children's Chapel room on the second floor of the education building.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Monday, May 25, 2026

Please join us at 11:45 a.m. on Memorial Day (May 25, 2026), at the bell tower for St. John's annual "For Whom the Bell Tolls" ("FWTBT") event. It is a brief service of healing and remembrance. We will gather at the bell tower, hold a brief service and ring the bell for each fallen service member whose name has been submitted.

If you have already provided names, you do not need to resubmit them. If you have a new name, please provide the full name, highest rank achieved and the associated conflict (e.g. Lt. Carter B. Haglar, Korean War). Names etc should  be submitted to Emily@stjohnsmontgomery.org no later than May 18, 2026.  The service member need not have died in combat or even while on active service. All who served and died are eligible to be on this list.

All participants will receive a lapel pin. We will have a soloist to sing at the event. Master Sergeant Donna Johnson, a soloist based in Birmingham, Alabama, who frequently performs at veteran events, will be performing at our FWTBT event.  A lunch of barbecue and catfish sandwiches will be offered in the parish hall afterwards.

Please email emily@stjohnsmontgomery.org by Monday, May 18 if you plan to attend.

Vacation Bible School Registration Deadline is TODAY

Vacation Bible School Registration Deadline is TODAY

Monday, June 1, 2026

Please use the links below to register your child for VBS!

Step back in time this summer at St. John’s for an unforgettable Vacation Bible School experience! From June 1–4, children are invited to journey to ancient Rome for “ROME: Paul and the Underground Church,” a vibrant marketplace-style VBS. Each day, participants will explore bustling shops, meet early Christians, and discover what life was like for Paul and the underground church as they shared the Good News in a challenging time.

Through hands-on activities, storytelling, music, and crafts, children will experience Scripture in a whole new way—immersing themselves in the sights, sounds, and spirit of the early Church.

Junior High Summer Outreach Experience

Jr. High Summer Outreach | Grades 7–9

Jr. High students (rising grades 7–9) are invited to join us for a meaningful and fun summer outreach experience May 31 – June 2. Participants will gather at Camp McDowell for a few days of service, connection, and encouragement while learning about two important ministries in our diocese: Special Session and Sawyerville.

During the trip, students will prepare snacks and activities and host a Happy Hour for campers at Special Session. They will also travel to Greensboro to visit the Sawyerville camps, spend time with campers and staff, and help support the Sawyerville team by providing dinner for their staff.

Participants will arrive at Camp McDowell on Sunday, May 31 at 3 PM and will be picked up in Birmingham on Tuesday, June 2 at 5 PM (exact location TBD).

The cost for the trip is $200, and financial assistance is available. This is a wonderful opportunity for Jr. High students to learn about outreach ministries in our diocese, build friendships, and serve others in meaningful ways. Space is limited, so sign up today!
