Welcome to St. John's Episcopal Church Guided Tour. St. John's is both an historic place of worship and a moving aesthetic experience. No one can stand among the radiant, stained-glass windows, the arches soaring to the high vaulted ceiling, without feeling a lift of the heart, a widening and calming of the spirit. The poet Milton, inspired by a similar spectacle and mood, sang of:
"... storied windows richly dight
Casting a dim, religious light.
There let the pealing organ blow
To the full-voiced choir below.
In service high and anthems clear,
As may with sweetness, through mine ear,
Dissolve me into ecstasies,
And bring all heaven before mine eyes."
The present church did not, of course, evolve by chance. Into these stones and their embellishments has gone the best that generations of dovoted communicants could offer of their substance and of themselves. Here in a changing world shine things that are changeless: the celebration of God's glory, and of those things without which human existence would have little order or meaning - faith, love, courage and art.
